Greetings.
We have a lot of new members here--welcome welcome welcome--and I think it is
time for me to post my traditional quarterly rah rah for the most rich and
comprehensive resource imaginable dealing with iris culture, iris history,
and true insider iris-lore. It is on-line, and it is free to all. The wisdom,
anecdotes, and experience of slews of highly opinionated and variably informed
irisarians await you at the Iris-list Archives, along with much fun, and an
occasional homegrown drama.
Among the topics which have arisen recently which I know have received a great
deal of attention in the past--all of which will be found in the Archives-- re
those listed in the subject line above. Those who visit and mosey
around--perhaps on one of those slow no-posts nights?--will find comprehensive
information about pre-emergent weed controls (including Surflan and Preen),
about Orris root and which species are suitable to make this product (with
Clarences' own pointers) about green irises, about the bluest irises, about
the best film to use to photograph blue irises (including one brand which I
don't recall having been mentioned in the most recent discussion) about
mulching and the attendant issue of vole control, about bug zappers and the
borer moth, about irises genetics, about mutant irises, about regional iris
preferences and growing conditions, about soil amendments (including alfalfa
and why your pellets must not contain corn), about THORNBIRD, an iris about
which folks enjoy having strong opinions, about nematodes, about companion
plants, about plant labels, about Dykes winners generally and what this award
means or doesn't mean for the average irisarian, about books, about
conservation issues and native species, about growing irises from seeds, about
Siberians, Louisianas, Japanese irises, and those exotic irises which offer
the the ultimate in "art shades" --Arilbreds. U name it!
I hope you will visit the Archives and learn to use them well. Occasionally
the search engine gets a bit cranky or doofus, but you must not be discouraged
or take attitude from that machine. Just jot down what it is doing or is
refusing to do and send Chris Lindsey--he is the fellow who maintains the
Archives and makes them possible out of his very own pocketbook--rah rah rah--
a little note from the webpage describing its misbehaviour. Chris will bring
it to heel, and then you can go back up and play to your heart's content.
There is no comparable resource in irisdom, and it is all yours. Here is the
