Gerry,
Phylloxera ravaged European (vinifera) grapes on two continents. Native
American grapes, which are the natural hosts of phylloxera, are not
devastated by it. It's the same with the so-called Dutch elm disease, which
destroys native American and European elms, but has no such lethal effect
on its natural hosts, the Far Eastern species (Siberian elm is a weed
around here).
