Dorothy,
I can' t wait to hear how your Sino-Siberian seedlings do. Jan in
Castlemaine area of Australia also wrote that she is trying some PCN seed-
lings. I imagine it'll take 2 years to bloom and 3 to mature.
I did in fact obtain three of Lorena Reid's "Dotted Line" in hopes
one
would make it between the transport, transplant, drought at planting time,
and
winter. Then I hope they find something they like although I do think I have
a
climate that can be very similar to the Pac Coast NW. In the next few
years,
I am hoping to obtain some seed when I have a little more experience with
the
different Beardless I am growing right now.
I planted them in early August but was experiencing a very bad
drought (we still are) so I may have lost them despite my watering attempts.
Is
it true though that besides initial planting time, they like to stay dry in
the
summer (or is that just PCN's or both?). And I would assume dry doesn't mean
without ANY water.
The foliage of two of them turned brown quickly with the third
staying
green until fall. None put up much new growth I could see. I will wait until

Spring to see for sure, I guess! I have also found that in my zone, the
winter climate can be drastically different from one winter to the next and
because
younger plants are still trying to establish their roots, you may be
unsuccessful one year with new plants but successful the next. I believe
this
to be true with some irises. Once established, they can adapt to winter
hardiness fairly well. I don't usually have the insulation of snow as ground
cover
for most of the winter here. It is a very unusual year here when we don't
experience the freezing and thawing but I also haven' t had it to the point
my Iris heave out of the ground.
