Since I am interested more in using the aril family in making
crosses, I wondered how on earth to make plans. They tended
to bloom earlier than the TBs so how is one to manage the
aril x TB? Save pollen from one season to the next? Or just
plan on making the TB x aril and let the pod parent remain
primarily in the TB category.
<
Yes, pollen can be frozen and used the following season. Or you can
sometimes get pollen from someone who has an earlier bloom season.
> There are several less than
1/4 aril cultivars out there. What is their makeup when/if they
get crossed back to the aril family? Are they likely to be classed
as 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 etc., but still contain more aril genes? Or do the
way the genes pair up in the original crosses make them pretty
much the same as any non aril ancestry TB?
<
Something that computes to less than 1/4 aril by the old quantum system
tends to function as either a 1/4-bred or non-aril, but the only way to
find out which category one falls into is to test it. I've found that the
relatively infertile 1/4-breds actually produce more seedlings when paired
with tetraploid arils than do the fully fertile TBs -- so certainly would
not discourage experimentation with the less-than-quarterbreds.
Some of the now-historic ones were described as having signal patches.
Today, one of these would have to be registered as a TB. Why not be the
one to shake up the iris world by introducing a TB with a signal? <G>
