Re: Re: CULT: I. japonica

From: Bill Shear <BILLS@hsc.edu>

Iris japonica is marginally hardy here in Zone 7a. The foliage is often
killed in a hard freeze, but usually comes back. It will bloom only after
the mildest of winters--only once for me in about 10 years.

This plant likes light shade and a very organic soil, with steady moisture
at the roots. It can spread rapidly by means of long runners.

I find it makes a good pot plant and blooms reliably in February or March
if the plants are summered in good light outdoors. Annual repotting is a
good idea, because it quickly fills a pot and probably depletes soil
nutrients after a year.
