Re: TB: CULT: Blyth cultivars

I had very little trouble growing Blyth varieties in Texas, but it
seems that very few of them like Mississippi. I still have some of
the older varieties, and when they bloom, I am in awe. I
commented last spring on EURYTHMIC blooming on show stalks
for the first time in about five years. MEGHAREE is another that is
stunning but hardly ever blooms. It shows poor branching here.

A lot of the Blyth varieties seems to be early bloomers and get
zapped easily by late cold snaps. AURA LIGHT was sent as a gift
plant, and it is early also. The flower is excellent in form and color,
but it is too large for the scrawny, spindly stalks it blooms on - at
least in my garden. Maybe it produces taller stalks elsewhere.

Barry Blyth has introduced many fine irises which are color
breaks. I just wish I could grow them better. I envy those of you
who can grow and bloom his fine introductions.
