I think the most obvious answer is that I don't have a 3 year old child, and
2 full on jobs. I work about 30hours, from home, in my paid job.
I probably don't have anywhere near as many seedlings as you either. I had
about 600, from 1000 seeds this year.
I have been planting them out into white polystyrene boxes, and as I do each
cross, I tip root ball from the pot, and break away the lower 1/2 of the
soil and discard this. I sit the rest of the soil and seedlings in a small
tray, and tease the seedlings apart as I go. when I have finished, I deduct
the number of seedlings from the number of seeds (indicated on the label)
and sift through the soil until I find them. I don't worry if I don't get
them all, and I discard the remaining soil in a pile. This years pile has 1
stray unknown iris seedling growing in it.
My pots vary in size from 3" for only a few seeds, to 7" for up to 80 seeds.
Crosses with more than 80 seeds are divided between 2 pots.
Hope your stall goes well at the trade festival.
My TB's are looking sad here even before they open. I should take a photo of
some of the frost damaged blooms I have. The pallida's look quite wierd this
year.
I am wondering to what extent the pollen will be damaged on many of the TB's
not yet open.
Hoping to get a few seedling photos sent to iris-photo's this morning. I
thought a few potential hybridisers might like to see the colours I am
getting from 1 cross. Any of those that I keep will have to be tested for
garden performance, branching, bud count etc.
All my irises have been affected by frosts this year so many seedlings have
very short stalks.
Cheers, Jan
