I received my Tempo Two catalog yesterday, it costs 4.50 airmail for
Barry to send it alone and he does it for free. On top of that I think this
is perhaps the best catalog I've ever had, and I've seen nearly all of them.
There are Many pictures and they are very accurate to my eye - not
embellished at all. They are not very large (2" x 2 1/4" too 1 1/2" x 1
1/4") but it's enough to get the point across and the resolution is very
good. Secondly I would like to applaud his inclusion of pedigrees for all
the newer Iris - not just his introductions. Thirdly I like his
descriptions, also very accurate listing faults and strengths, without too
much sales pitch.
What catch's my eye ? - There are two siblings (GLITTERATI and
CABARET GIRL) buff to apricot over plum-magenta bicolors, each with a
tangerine beard and a well defined border on the falls matching the
standards. There's a very Thornbird like sans horns (think AIS bulletin
cover) ANTIQUITY with modern form - definitely a love/hate thing, in fact
there are several flavors of this 'coffee with cream' sort of coloring in
the catalog. Several near pink amoena's from this year and past. A strong
Luminata HIGH MASTER from Fancy Woman, has a strong lemon flush and edging
to complement the typical magenta luminata pattern. Two nice blue -
"neglecta plics" (my term) one, LORD of LETTERS, has a wide clearly defined
band of darkest blue on the falls and even darker hafts. And two nice
neglectas, one SO has lines on the falls ala Notorius. The lined progenitor
is CRAZY FOR YOU - white over gray-purple, the falls are entirely lined -
really odd. One '99 I would get is a modern Wabash, ENJOY THE PARTY, with
the addition of a crisp pale edge on the ruffled falls, from luminata
breeding.
As far as availability here, I noticed that the US intro date is one
year later than the AU date. So It makes sense (to me) to order anything '00
and '99, with a break-even cost-wise occurring for '98's next Spring.
I am also interested in his SDB's, since they have been good parents
in the past and seem to cope well here in Zone 9. A stunner is RACY, pink
with violet infusion and tangerine beards ending with a violet stripe
extending down the falls.
I have had good luck so far with another Oz order (LA's from
Heather) so I am very tempted, besides how often can you go Iris shopping
for Christmas ?
