Walter,
I have been contemplating asking a question and this seems like a good time.
Most hybridizers are breeding for show bench iris. Much has been said, from
time to time, about the difference in a good show iris and a good garden
iris. It would seem to me that the sequence and placement of blooms is less
important on garden iris.
And . . . should hybridizers introduce garden varieties that are not
necessarily good on the show bench? At least one Dykes comes to mind.
Close observation of my plicata seedling, this fall, revealed that the first
terminal to open was the bottom branch. It has opened a bloom just as each
previous bloom closes, and at no time has it had more than one bloom open.
The colors are sharp and the rebloom generous. Yet, as it blooms this fall,
it would never do well on the show bench. I recall something being out of
order in the spring bloom and think it is the sequence. It will survive
another year to please my neighbors and give time for further analysis. (Did
I mention that people drive down my street just to look at them?)
So, again---should hybridizers introduce irises that don't show well?
