RE: Cult: Late moving-discenting opinion

There had been an inquiry re moving an iris at this time in colder areas and the consences was not to do it. This is a discenting opinion. I'm still moving bearded iris and ususually do so until the middle of October. Last year there was good snow cover and the losses were almost none. A good winter protection helps, I try to use straw. Covering with dirt just proved to be too much work when it came to taking it off in spring. The secret is to not let the plant dry out. The watering is usually taken care of by the fall rains. In the spring there can be a lot of heaving present with the smaller plants (MDB & SDB) requiring some attention, some time referred to as the "iris two step". This is walking down the rows and gently stepping on the plants forcing them back into the ground. Moving iris can just about be done anytime in your own garden where you get them in the ground quickly. Moving with a spade taking dirt with them at chancy times works well.
