Thanks, Donald Eaves in Texas, for your detailed post on seed/seedling
treatment/survival. I moved my seed flats into a sunnier area year
before last when
the other location became full shade rather than partial and that is
when my
germination percentage dropped to nearly nothing. I just got the
current Tempo
Two catalog yesterday and there is a very detailed page-long discussion
on
hybridizing, seed handling etc. He specifically mentions that drying
during critical
periods of seed stratification/germination can induce prolonged dormancy
that may
take years to break. Sigh. I dug around a bit in one of the two year
old pots and
found several perfectly normal looking ungerminated seeds....so I guess
I will pull the
last two years seed starting pots and set them in the shade somewhere
for the next
10 years to see if any more will eventually germinate.
He also says that one should plan on it taking 10 years before having
much of
anything worth introducing ...I don't know if that includes 2 or three
years of fumbling
around trying to learn how to get seeds to germinate....
