Light frosts here and there in the Farmville area this morning. However, at
our house, the low was 37F, and there was no damage to tender plants left
out, while a friend in a local "cold spot" reported 28F. We live on a low
ridge, and cold air tends to drain away; the exception is the outside of the
north wall of the greenhouse, where cold air moving downslope gets trapped.
Tree cover helps to trap heat rather than letting it radiate away. Frosts
can occur even though the air temperature does not reach freezing, if the
night is clear and quiet. Radiative cooling from surfaces is the culprit.
