Re: CULT: late planting & manure for heat

Sue, many years ago, I started lettuce plants this way, but wasn't able
to get consistent heat (i.e., I didn't know what I was doing). Would
you (or anybody else with experience) post what has worked for you for
heating a cold frame with manure? How big the cold frame, how deep,
composition of manure (is urine necessary? bedding?), how much soil on
top of manure, etc? I hadn't thought of trying this with my iris
seedlings, but would like to think about it especially if they don't
germinate till December or January.

Thanks.
Re: erratic weather - it sometimes drops into the low 20s in November,
only to stay above freezing all thru December. As a rule of thumb, I
don't count on trying to dig holes in the ground from around Christmas
till February. If the ground is going to be (stay) frozen, it is most
likely to be during that time. Some winters, the ground has not frozen
for more than a day or two. No charming ice columns here (too gravelly
& not enough clay), but I love the imagery of that and the spider filled
beds <g>
