Even here in hot southern Arizona I have found that the earlier irises are
planted after the August digging the better they grow. I start planting in
mid September when the ground is so hot it burns my hands. I try to finish
by the first week in October. The next spring the earliest planted irises
look and bloom better than the later ones. Irises planted after the middle
of October when the daily temperature ranges are from 60 to 80 degrees F.
often won't grow and die. It takes irises three to six weeks for their root
system to develop, and if the ground gets too cool new roots won't grow.
Perhaps the shorter days have something to do with it also. This year mine
were all planted when it was too hot, but they seem to be growing nicely.
