You have already received the answers that you were looking for but
one thing that was ommitted was a comment on bulbs in particular.
Many of the bulbs, tulips in particular, seem to be like filet mignon
for squirrels and chipmunks.
I planted huge numbers of various bulbs and the only ones that
survived the "hunters and gathers" were those that are poisonous or
inedible like onamental onion, daffodils and hyacinth.
I don't know how dutch iris taste but if they don't grow it may not
have anything to do with the colour of your thumbs.
