A Guide to the Species Irises by the British Iris Society, has this to say:
As an oncocyclus, "light and air at all times of the year, especially in
winter...they are plants of open hillsides and windy steppes....it is also
important that the rhizomes receive sufficient heat in summer."
Oncocyclus in general:
"Young, healthy plants can be grown from seed...(but)slow and unreliable.
germinate erratically...there is evidence that inhibitors in the seed are
lost gradually by leaching as well as over time, (i.e. after 5 or 6 years).
Dry seed should be sown in autumn in pots of sandy soil and stood outside to
receive all available winter rain. As soon as the leaf of a young plant is
seen the pot should be brought inside, fed and the young plants grown on as
normal. Either after three leaves have appeared, or in autumn, the plantlets
are dug out and re-potted and the pot put outside again so further seeds can
germinate next winter and so on until either all the seeds have germinated
or the grower is fed up with waiting...there is a record of a 25 year old
seed germinating...Neville Watkins has found that treating seeds by soaking
for one week, scraping, and chilling for two months as if they were bearded
iris cultivars, produces rapid and comprehensive germination."
i.meda in particular:
from Iran, "found on dry hills, often in sandy or gravelly soils at
1400-2400 meters. ....species has not done well in cultivation in
England...probably requires drier conditions than most of the northern
species and particularly dry summers."
You might also try to find the Brian Mathews book on the subject which I
seem to have misplaced.
