If you're only intent on mooching free irises, this approach might work
once.

More valuable are the friendships that can evolve from a shared interest in
plants. Even growers with large collections of irises usually have other
plant interests so consider offering something from your garden as a "thank
you". (Didn't Miss Manners already cover this?)
