CULT:SPU:CONTAINERS

Hi,
I posted early last summer about planting my Spurias in large plastic
tubs, and that I stopped watering them to force dormancy for the summer. I
began watering them regularly again about a month ago.
The result of my experiment was that 43 of the 47 cultivars have
survived and are showing new growth. I must honestly say that about 10 of
them don't look like they thrived under these conditions, but they are poking
up a few new shoots. I plan to have an automatic watering system set up by
next summer, so I will have the option of regular water. I'm sure that they
will do better under those conditions.
I think, though, that this shows that spurias are a good option for
the desert. They don't have to be watered during the long, hot summer when
our water rates go up exponentially. It also makes them a great choice for
our winter visitors, who are absent in the summer months.
