Diana, I'd wait to do it in the spring. It won't hurt to leave it as it is
now for the winter, particularly if there is good drainage. While the
rhizome would eventually find its way to the surface (if it doesn't rot),
but bloom would certainly be delayed. As soon as you can work the ground in
the spring, you can replant it. It might even bloom.

Hi iris folks,
I bought an SDB earlier this year planted in a pot. The rhizome was
buried under the soil surface so I thought that was how it should be
planted and put it in the soil with the rhizome buried. It didn't grow
well so now I am wondering if I should replant it with its rhizome on
the soil surface? Can anyone please tell me? TIA.
