CULT: # cultivars here, by decade

Instead of collecting the latest and most interesting cultivars, my
'collection' is mostly the 'tough ones', for my climate, that are
affordable. I don't believe that historic irises have any great
advantage of toughness over newer cultivars, but the older they are, the
less expensive (usually), and they sometimes (but NOT always) give an
idea of which lines used by current hybridizers are more likely than
others to be tough enough to thrive here.

So, just for fun, I sorted the most recent version of my database to see
how many cultivars from different eras have lived well enough to survive
here.
===========
Number of cultivars growing here as of Aug 2001 (don't have anything
entered in the database for this year yet)

Decade of registration No of cultivars
2000-present                 2
1990-1999                     197
1980-1989                     165
1970-1979                     70
1960-1969                     44
pre 1960                         73

total                                 551
======================
Cultivars more than 3 years old are usually priced low enough and have
gotten enough comment on performance that I will gamble and buy a few.
More recent ones are usually bonuses; club order plants (donated to
members in exchange for future increase); swaps; and gifts.
