I recommend you use the "powdered" gypsum. My irises reacted positively to
the treatment by following the steps previously mentioned including removing
the surrounding contaminated soil. Personally, I believe the drought
(potential stress factor) encountered by many this past year has led to a
decrease in rainfall and less natural availability of sulfur. sulfur being a
necessary nutrient (amino acids - cyctine, thiamine, methione, jasmonic
acid). Lack of sulfur seems to weaken it's built in defense system to
respond to stress factors such as drought, insect invasion, bacteria, fungus
etc. I don't know exactly why the calcium/sulfur treatment worked - I'll
leave that to someone else to figure out.
I didn't notice any change in the plants receiving the aspirin (i did not use
it on all of them). Sometimes i think it may in fact have a detrimental
effect. if you take an aspirin it masks the symptoms. Maybe in masking the
symptoms, it actually suppresses the plant NOT to respond, trigger or react
naturally by release the amino acids, enzymes that defend itself.
It would be interesting to find out who is adding sulfur to their water and
who is amending their soil with gypsum and if these users have a lower rate
of rot.
I don't think one iris is more susceptible to rot verse another iris. It is
my understanding that many plants are prone to be infected by erwinia
carotovors. Finding a gene that is resistant to this pathogen and introducing
that particular gene into the irises sounds more likely. As in most cases, we
have made more headway in prevention as opposed to cure.
