I think trying to get a 100% correct ID on a iris is next to imposable. The only sure way would be to have a DNA test preformed when registered. Sure would cut down on new intros.
Pictures on monitors? Take Thornbird it has a different color in different gardens. So do other iris. So in the garden we have differences.
I would imagine there are a lot of registered iris that do not exist. Where would you get pictures of some of the very rare ones that are grown by just a couple of people.
I take a lot of digital iris pictures and quite a few the color does not look like the iris in real life.
If more people would post to iris-photos there pictures we would have a searchable data base of iris photos. Those photos might give you some idea of what you have. There might be several different photos to compare.
If AIS put them on a CD they should be the official photo. That would not be possible to do at this time and be 100% correct.
Even the descriptions in R&Is are very general and cannot be used to get a 100% ID.
For example " light blue self, white beard" that covers a lot of iris.
Just my thoughts
