The short answer is I do not know. Perhaps no one does. If I had it on hand
that is what I would use. I am still planting and moving things here. I am
using 5-20-20 under everything I plant and then top dressing around the
perimeter of the planted rhizomes.
I once top dressed every other bed with ammonium nitrate. I could recognize
no difference in the bloom performance, increase or incidence of rot in the
fertilized and unfertilized beds. This test was however inconclusive since
different irises were used in each bed.
Irises are growing fast here now. I think they need the nutrients.
