Talk about your newbie questions here... gee.
Even though I've been fascinated with irises for many years i never
really devoted a lot of time to learn about the many varieties.
If anyone has some spare time on their hands for a newbie please
continue on. I have a list below of iris I am interested in
purchasing for my garden and for potential hybridizing efforts.
First I would like to know about their hardiness (if they'd make it
in zone 4b or if I should consider avoiding certain iris listed).
Then, if anyone can tell me about their fertility (pod, pollen
fertile, sterile) and if they'd be good to use in hybridizing
experiments. The reason I ask is because some of these varieties
are ''historical'' and with the advancements in genetic work, I may
be setting myself back by hybridizing say something like a 'great
lakes - (cousins 38)' x 'navy blues - (r.dunn 1994)'. Many
hybridizers would have more indepth reasons for a cross like this. My
purpose would be to see the variation in flower coloration from the
offspring, their hardiness, fertility, etc. (not even considering
reblooming and what not) Anyway, before I go and write a thesis ;)
let me list the varieties and see what advice I get from the seasoned
irisarians. (If you need the breeder name and year, which i doubt, i
can supply it)
Alexander's Ragtime Band, Black Hills, Blue Anew, Cliffs of Dover,
Crowned Heads, G'day Mate, Great Lakes, Navy Blues, Nordic Ice,
Pacific Panorama, Riverboat Blues, Silver Dividends, Skating Party,
Son Of Dracula, Tide's In, Victoria Falls, Eternal Bliss, Point Made,
Immortality, and Champagne Elegance.
Any suggestions, before I spend a lot of money on rhizomes, which
would do good up here in zone 4b before i even consider hybridizing
them.
Thanks so much
