I don't mean to add to any perception of an AIS west coast clique, but
the current president of AIS is Terry Aitken who lives in Oregon. The
immediate past president is Clarence Mahan who lives in Virginia and the
president before Clarence was Dave Niswonger, a resident of Missouri.
And as you mentioned, Linda, there are board members from throughout
the US, and 1 from Canada. Of the 13 Directors, only 2 live on the
West Coast, both in California. There are 4, however, from East Coast
states: Maine, New York, and 2 from Virginia (one of whom is the RVP
Representative). The remaining 7 Directors hail from Oklahoma,
Illinois, Texas, Montana, 2 from Missouri, and 1 from Ontario, Canada.
Of the 8 past presidents of AIS, only 2 live on the West Coast, both in
California. The others live in Michigan, Oklahoma, Kansas,
Massachusetts, Missouri, and Virginia.
3 of the 5 officers of AIS though, do live on the West Coast. The
President, Terry Aitken lives in Oregon, the 1st Vice President, Jeanne
Clay Plank lives in California, and the Treasurer, Jay Hudson also
resides in California. The 2nd Vice President, E. Roy Epperson lives in
North Carolina, and the Secretary, Sara Marley lives in New York. In
addition, 3 of the 4 Administrative Officers also live on the West
Coast, and the 4th lives on the East Coast. These Administrative
Officers are the Registrar, Membership Secretary, Recording Secretary,
and Publication Sales Director.
So, it would appear that both coasts are well represented by Officers
and Directors of AIS. To sum it all up geographically:
West Coast: 3 Officers, 2 Directors, and 3 Administrative Officers
East Coast: 2 Officers, 4 Directors, and 1 Administrative Officer
Rest of the States and Provinces: 0 Officers, 7 Directors, 0
Administrative Officers
My own feelings about all of this. Of course, we need all areas well
represented, but there will always be a few areas that appear to have
more than its fair share of representation. The fact is that these
areas change from year to year. One could argue that, in addition to
the west coast states of California and Oregon, that Missouri, New
York, Oklahoma, and Virginia are all over represented, having 2 or more
Officers and/or Directors and/or living past Presidents of AIS (who may
continue to attend and sit on board meetings as Directors). After the
next group of Directors terms expire and new ones are in place, the
geographic spectrum of the Board of Directors will change again. And at
the end of every 3 year term for Officers, that geographic spectrum also
changes. As I mentioned, I think that all areas should be represented,
but at the same time, I am very appreciative of all those who are
willing to donate their time and energy to AIS. At the end of the day,
as long as they are serving the best interests of AIS, I, personally,
don't really care where the people who are officers or Directors live.

Where I just spent way too much time looking all that up at this hour of
the night. Now to bed and up early to check on 'Belvi Cloud' which has
a nicely branched stock with 7 buds. I plan on cutting it sometime
Saturday, before a killing frost hits it Saturday night.
