question on storing rhizomes

We're moving early next year and I would like to store our bearded
irises if possible. Can anyone advise if this is possible, how to do
so and for how long? We live in Northern Calif. I can put them in
pots until we settle but I would prefer to store many in as compact
area as possible. Thanks.
