HYB: backcrosses, etc...

Okay, so I'm new (sue me)... I'm still a bit confused and learning...
I was curious about my recent limited number of searches of TB iris
pedigrees. In the few I've searched, I haven't seen anyone that has
backcrossed an older variety to a more recently developed iris (yet).
I know that it's done, I guess I must be missing something.
I know, from experience with tropical fishes and cockatiels that
backcrosses to older colorations can be essential but can cause
setbacks. But knowing of the potential setbacks, one can mostly avoid
them through careful selection of parent stock. Are the newer
developed TB's that much better or is it that the drawbacks of a
backcross are more damaging than good. Ms. Sharon McCallister has a
lot of good info on her website regarding hybridizing. I'm just
curious as to more about the "good" or "bad" experiences encountered
by hybridizers concerning using "historics" or "old stock" iris to
enhance or somehow better the new. I don't want to jump into the iris
hybridizing game totally blind. :)
Are there any publications or other online sources I can turn that
may already have more info available? :)
Thanks to all for your continued assistance....
