*nodding head* mmm hmm...
interesting, perhaps the 50 chromosome cultivars are another area for myself to consider pursuing?
thanks...

Rather than send those who interested straight to the archives, I'll offer a
brief [for me] explanation:
1. The 50-chromosome cultivars appeared during the diploid to tetraploid
conversion period and some clearly performed as amphidiploids. I strongly
suspect that they would have proven to be a fertile family if someone had
focused on exploring them, but they were compatible enough with the
48-chromosome tetraploids that for all practical purposes the 48-, 49- and
50-chromosome cultivars were lumped together as tetraploid breeders. The
resulting stabilization process led to today's essentially autotetraploids --
but the price was the loss of some chromosomes and the traits they carried.
2. The elimination of dominant traits has been a key factor in the
progress made during the intervening decades. Sometimes this has been
intentional, as in breeding out undesirable traits. Sometimes it has been
the natural byproduct of a program breeding for recessive ones.
So my plan was to look for desirable traits in this historical group and
cross to modern cultivars to determine whether they are dominant or
recessive. When one proves to be dominant, it can be retained by
line-breeding without further backcrossing.
