Christy,
I'd heard that about iris seeds possibly germinating up to 7 or 8 years later. I guess I'll learn what happens here after trying it...
I also remember the temperature extremes my fiancees family, who lived about 100 miles east of where we lived in Oregon, experienced. We were in Reedsport, right on the coast. They were in the valley. And they had nearly the same termperature extremes as Minnesota (not quite as cold) and that you mentioned having in WA. Including snow and cold in the winter and 100's in the summer.
Thanks...

Your winter conditions are quite similar to ours including shirt-sleeve
weather for about a week in January followed by a drop to the minus 20s.
Bearded iris seeds should have no trouble with any of this and in fact,
germination has usually been better after a good wild winter.
Don't cover the seed beds. It can keep necessary moisture and cold from the
seeds and provide a nice place for mice to play during the winter.
Bearded iris seeds begin to pop out of the ground after the soil has
thoroughly warmed, usually in mid-May. I suspect the same would be true in
your area.
One thing to keep in mind.... Not all seeds will germinate the first year so
contain the seeds within a buried pot or plan to reserve that spot for a
minimum of 4 years from seeding. It's not unusual, especially in dry areas
such as ours, for seeds to germinate 4 to 8 years later.
