At a recent iris 'learning day' with Barry Blyth, he said to put the lime on liberally like a snow storm, or icing sugar on top of a sponge cake. Now I took his advice because my soil leans towards the acid side, but if your soil is already very alkaline you shouldn't need to lime it at all. Or you could use dolomite which i don't think changes the pH.Linda, if you find out how much lime, please let me know in case I miss the
The sort of lime I use is just called gardeners lime (from a garden shop), and does not burn my hands. Perhaps someone else can explain here, about the different types of lime and their action?
