Re: CULT: Irises in NWT?

 Hi Mark:
Yes NWT = Northwest Territories, Canada.
I`v got a couple Siberians, and 4 of the bearded ones
all for about six year now.
Joined the list this spring to find out more about
Irises as I went and got my self some seed this past
Feb. I`v commenced cutting back some [about 1/2 acre]
of the boreal forest on my property this year for more
flower beds, some of which will be dedicated to
Irises.
The bearded Irises only flower every second year or
so for me. But from reading on the list I`v determined
I don`t have them in a very good spot, next to full
shade, on the north side of the house where they only
get a couple hours of sun per day in June, July and
part of August. The Siberians do real well, flowering
each year and actually producing seed, they are
planted in full sun.
So in reality I`m on the learning curve when it comes
to Irises growing up here. For that matter I have to
learn just about everything about them, even as to
type of Irises and how to tell them apart.
Our summers are beautiful, from min May to mid Aug.
it doesn`t get dark, only a couple hours of twilight
each day. Temperatures range from mid 70`s F. to high
90`s F. with very little rain. Winter is about to set
in , no snow yet but we have about an inch of frost in
the soils surface. So when we get our first snow it
will be here to stay until late April. We don`t really
have a spring and fall, it more or less goes straight
from winter to summer and summer to winter. Nights are
down to around +20F. with days up to +35F at this time
of year.
