Re: CULT: Aussie spring

Jan, how wet is wet? I am struggling with the concept of it being cool

Oz.
Colleen is pretty much right, although the cold is not so cold as a few miles south in Ballarat, due to the shelter of the surrounding hills and pine forests, and a good cover of cloud most nights. We have had more frosts this year than last, but nothing to compare with what we used to get in Castlemaine, which is overall a far hotter, drier climate - 45 minutes up the road.
The rain is mostly drizzle. Having been brought up in Melbourne, that seems normal to me. The words 'Melbourne' and 'drizzle' are synonomous. We do get some heavy stuff, but not the monsoonal type rains we used to get in Castlemaine - where the clouds would threaten for weeks on end with not a drop, then suddenly bucket down for an hour and cave peoples ceilings in.
Winter rain? Yeah - plus Autumn rain, Spring rain, and fairly frequent summer rain.
Only 2 weeks ago I was weeding on a cool day with tentative sunshine, determined to get a whole bed complete before going to work. It started to drizzle again, then sleet. I decided to pack it in for the day, but by the time I got to the back door (all of 20 yards) the sun was out again. 2 days ago I got caught in a 2 minute hail storm. It snows perhaps 6 times a year here, but seldom light enough to stay on the ground. Ballarat sometimes has delightful blankets of snow.
The high point is that we have our local water supply, enough to keep Creswick happy most years, and will shortly be put back on it due to a slackening of the health laws - so we can have no restrictions over summer. We have been told to only drink it boiled, a small price to pay for being able to use the sprinklers again :-)
I have decided to pick a few IB and SDB stalks tonight so that they hopefully dry out before the buds fully open for Saturdays show.
AS I am in the middle of a pile of book work (tax stuff) the rain just dampens the mood thoroughly.
Cheers, Jan
