Rosalie,
I did a quick comparison between the zone map via Jackson and Perkins and the
USDA Hardiness Zone map provided by the National Arboretum.
If you look just at the J&P map w/out inputting your zip code, the zones are
kinda vague and you do not get the more exact microclimate info. However, if
you input your zip code, it will produce a zone with more exact information.
(ie...rather than just zone 6 via the map, it will give 6a, 6b, etc...)
When I cross referenced my own zone from J&P vs. the USDA Hardiness Zone map,
they matched. (actually, I was surprised...I am on the edge of a
microclimate and it graded me to the lower #...I guess I'm a 6b rather than a 7a).
From this quick check, I would guesstimate that the J&P website somehow uses
a detailed database which contains all US zip codes which should also
correlate to the USDA H.Z. map. The J&P zones make it really easy to get your exact
zone. The USDA map, even when you click on your general area, the counties are
still so small that it's hard to decipher. Someone out there may know of a
better source.
The link for the USDA map I used was : <A HREF="http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html">

Quick check on rebloom status: ***DISCLAIMER*** All the below are new
plantings for me. The bloom stalks had to be set in the rhizome when they were
planted as they have not had time to have done this on their own ... However,
they must be happy...normal size stalks and normal branching so far... It's
getting down below freezing tonight...Orange Harvest was too tall to place a
covering over it so I cut the stalk to let it finish inside. The others are still
short enough that 5 gal buckets do the trick. Seems that everything I planted
with remonant qualities is throwing stalks...Unfortunately this will inhibit
their spring bloom so no pollen for me from these...They have plenty of
increase, but it's not going to be blooming size.
Orange Harvest - B. Jones 1986
Summer Olympics - R.G.Smith 1976
Immortality - Zurbrigg 1982
Cantina - Byers 1989
Harvest Of Memories - Zurbrigg 1985
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
-Evan U. *zone 6b now* Culleoka, TN
