I loved this story. I can't really say how common orange was as a color in irises at the time you mention, but I can say a really strong growing orange is hard to find in my parts even with the latest, greatest intros to work with. It's wonderful you are still growing it. Join iris-photos and post a photo if you have one and are willing. I'd love to see a photo.
