Re: HYB: pigments


This morning, the jars looked about the same as yesterday, only with
less liquid in the bottom alcohol/water layer.  Assuming some of the
alcohol had evaporated, I added more, just to see what would happen, and
now the IC-1 pigment is back in the top layer!

I guess this means that whatever pigment is in the falls of IC-1 is
soluble in isopropyl alcohol (the alcohol I happened to have in my
medicine cabinet), but not in water (??), and only soluble in oil when
it isnt' soluble in water?  This really doesn't make any sense, unless
the pigment is changing chemical form depending on the concentration of
alcohol.  Which doesn't make any sense from what I remember of organic
chemistry.

Science is always more fun & interesting when experiments don't turn out
as expected. <g>
