Kendal:
I really enjoyed your story about your grandfather and the orange iris. I am looking forward to your posting pictures of it, and if you are interested in sharing some of it, next year or whenever, please let me know.
In looking thru a few of the Cooley's catalogs of the early 50's, I see no orange iris offered for sale, and if there were any at that time, Cooley's would surely have them, as they seemed to have a wide variety of colors for sale.
I do know that things like NARANJA and PRINCE of ORANGE from the 40's were 'approaches' to orange, but they really were yellows with some reddish blendings, to make them appear orange. Then there were the 'copper colored' iris, which also approached orange, but were not really orange either. Another 'close' one DAYBREAK, sort of a pink, yellow blend, almost won the Dykes in the 40's too.
So it sounds to me like your grandfather did indeed have something unique and special when he first grew his orange iris.
You are fortunate for having it, and they(the iris) are fortunate for having you keep them going so that they might be admired and appreciated by others.
Laetitia
