Linda Mann asks about ANGELIC WINGS and the question of the tangerine factor.
Considering the ancestry of ANGELIC WINGS, I'd say it's possible, but I doubt
it being tttt. The factor is scattered thinly in the ancestry, I suspect.
Gatty's awesome WHITE LIGHTENING, I DO and ENGLISH COTTAGE are improbable but
possible sources. AW is described with the beard being red and yellow--which
doesn't sound like tangerine beards.
"Red" is in the eye of the beholder--hot orange can look pretty red at times
and may or may not indicate "t" is present.
One way to find out what is going on with ANGELIC WINGS is to cross it with an
unambiguous 4-t variety and take a look at the progeny. Tangerine-red beards
are pretty obvious most of the time but not always. In a set of seedlings,
though, you'll know. If *any* have yellow beards, ANGELIC WINGS is something
other than tttt. If any of the seedlings *do* have unambiguous red beards and
Lycopene showing in the petals, AW has at least 2-t and probably more.
One thing that Chuck Chapman has consistently pointed out is that not all
carotenoids are affected by "t."
Since the recognition has emerged that Lycopene occurs *before* beta- and
alpha-carotene in the synthesis of the pigments, understanding the red-bearded
yellows is a bit more complicated. Some molecular studies and pigment
analyses are going to have to be done before this gets sorted out.
Most of the first tangerine-bearded varieties weren't recognized, as the
colors were muted and the very obvious "pink bud" flamingo color didn't show
up until 1942 in David Hall's seedlings.
As an example of ambiguity, Dr. Loomis' first t-bearing seedlings were clearly
different from the ordinary, but not so obviously "pink" that he plunged into
working with them. PIKE'S PEAK PINK (SQ-72) was the first in his work that
was unambiguous, and as a result, it appears prominantly in some very
important pedigrees--such as in the sister seedlings PINK TOWER and PINK
FORMAL from Tell Muhlestein.
