Betty,
Maybe what you can do, as an organization, is to get together with your top
show people and make a presentation, perhaps using PowerPoint. It would
contain pictures of what to look for when showing an iris, text slides
explaining procedures, and, maybe, a voice over to explain it all. Certainly
not an easy effort, and it would take sometime to put together. Once you
have it, it can be presented at a meeting, then uploaded to the club's
website for download. It can be made available to members only or for
general distribution--your group's call. Then, any member can have a
look-see at any time. Promotion at meetings or in your group's publication
will make it known that it is available.
I have a program I do for fish clubs on showing fish which is a combination
of slides and actual how-to. I do plan on doing the transferal to a
PowerPoint slide show when I get the chance to scan the slides I use, and to
get some digital shots of the how-to portion (actual show tank setup). I
also do one on judging, to which I want to give the same treatment.

Southern Kentucky Iris Society had their regular October meeting last
night.
We had a great attendance. Probably the best ever for an Oct. meeting.
Opportunities abound!
We were discussing the 2006 Show. A local member expressed his frustration
at the lack of help in show exhibiting. He feels that local members want
to
'hold' their exhibition secrets so they have an edge in the show. When he
stated this, I saw a mixture of expressions around the room.
Over a 20 year span, my experience has been the opposite. I've found
members to be extremely helpful. Here's the catch! You can't wait to ask
for help
until everyone is lined up in the prep room! Then people are busy trying
to
get their irises onto the show bench! We all get tunnel vision.
Distractions are critical at that time. Everything must be perfect! ;-)
I made this mistake the first year I showed, after being assured there
would
be plenty of help! No one had the time, and the very person that had
assured me of help simply pointed to each of my stalks and said "show this
one, and
this one, etc." <okay!>
Fortunately for me, I'd read everything I could find on preparation before
I
went to the show! <vbg> Won the bronze metal!
Our club has repeatedly given classes in stalk selection and preparation,
but, unfortunately, the only people that seem to show up are the ones that
already know how to exhibit. We've thought it was necessary to have stalks
for
show and tell.
Might I suggest that winter is a good time/season for clubs to prepare
their
members for show time by passing out literature and having discussion
groups??
There are probably many articles on the subject (?), but the one that stuck
in my memory is the April 1995 (Number 297) article on page 17 by Sheldon
Butt! Legendary!
Anyone know of other articles?
Members also expressed interest in methods of transportation! Haven't
hunted these up yet.
