Thanks Rosalie.  I also got a couple of offlist explanations

I posted a photo of a seedling stalk.  Not sure if this one has two
branches and two spurs or three branches and a spur.

The lowest one is obviously a branch.

I guess the next one is also a branch?  It has two buds.

Third one from the bottom has a short stalk, but only one bud I can feel
- is it a spur or a branch?

The top one is one bud and no stalk that I can see, so guess it's a spur
for sure.

<A spur as I understand it, is a bud that comes right out of the stem
with no
                   stem of its own as a branch does. Does this help?
Luckily, it doesn't happen
                   very often, and, of course, always on the one you
want to really see at its
                   best -- and the petals get squushed against the stem!

< It's the short ones that bloom almost on the stalk.  Main difference
is it's shorter and usually only has one bloom.  >
