The sorting thing is a problem. For various reasons, I'd not bloomed MATRIX
or RENOWN until lately. I though I had RENOWN years ago, but it wasn't. I
really liked the one I had better. Isn't that the way of it? I only made
one cross with it, but I liked what I got. Now it goes into that never land of
the unknown!
The conversation about MATRIX and red crosses was very interesting.
As to the performance of RENOWN & MATRIX in my garden, I'd have to go on the
past 14 months and I'd say they are neck & neck. RENOWN has produced 2
stalks (in the past 3 weeks) and MATRIX has produced 3 stalks, 1 that got frost
bit last year, and two that are out there now. No spring bloom.
Seems like people have used them both quite a bit. Since I've not used them
in breeding before, I thought I might sidestep some common problems. I've
been reading, and trying to absorb and digest information in a way that will
keep me from going down the same path others have already walked.
I'm encouraged by the newer things Innerst has introduced. Although I'd
never have used ANXIOUS. I'm not inclined to breed with SA as they aren't among
my favorites.
In my program, it's necessary for at least one of the parents to have the
ability to rebloom here, in my garden. I can't imagine how many seedlings I'd
have to raise from two California rebloomers in order to get a KY rebloomer.
It could be anywhere from one to a thousand! Or more!
Not that I haven't made those crosses in a moment of weakness! Pollen is
pollen after all! <vbg>
