RENOWN doesn't make twisted or curvy stalks here, just short, clubby.
SEASON OF MISTS has been fairly tall with slender stalks. It's a <very>
poor grower here - may have lost it. (rot prone)
HARVEST OF MEMORIES makes stalks of every type imagineable - tall, well
branched, balanced and beautiful; corkscrewed all over the place;
stunted. But it makes so many stalks, there are bound to be some really
good ones out there somewhere <g>
My theory is that cultivars that produce variable stalks are more
weather sensitive (differential effects on growth rate of cells) than
those that are more consistent, <and> that a big part of that difference
is due to differences in root system. Better roots means better ability
to keep moisture uptake uniform. Probably some important differences in
distribution/abundance of fine feeder roots vs thick roots too.
I see big differences between cultivars in depth of roots - those that
grow most of their roots near the surface may be affected more by
variable moisture supply and temperatures. Some of my seedlings have
roots going straight down for two feet. Lateral flowing water is down
quite a bit deeper, but moisture is more consistent even a few feet
down.
RENOWN doesn't have much of a root system, HoM is average. Takes some
cultivars a few years to get enough root system here to make normal
stalks. If they live that long <g>
