This is getting beyond the point where I can even fool myself into
thinking I know what I'm talking about, but here goes...
Plants have all kinds of hormones that regulate different things,
including flower bud formation, growth etc. Some hormones are triggered
by temperature, others by day length, and I guess others by nutrient
availability and water supply. The ones I've heard about the most (both
in spring/fall rebloomers and other types of plants that only bloom at a
particular time of year) are related to daylength - lengthening days
trigger bloom in spring or shortening days trigger bloom in fall - or
maybe it's a certain temperature range. Or both....
So, yes, I meant that there are hormones that limit the bloom to a
certain increasing/decreasing daylength and/or temperature. If that
mechanism doesn't work right (i.e., there is a 'mistake' in the genes
that regulate such things), then the plant might grow and bloom
continuously, as long as other conditions are favorable.
I hope that helps and isn't too far from what is known about such
things. Hopefully somebody in this group who knows more about it will
correct my mistakes. Or try rummaging around on the web for plant
hormones & vernalization.
<Linda, what do you mean by mistakes that confuse irises about their
blooming season? Would that mean that irises have some sort of
inhibiting factor that limits their bloom to a certain time of year that
when suppressed leads to rebloom? >
