Yuri Pirigov and I did an article in the Medianite
exposing the problems with Iris astrachanica. The name
astrachanica is now considered a synonym of Iris
scariosa. True Iris scariosa has very rarely been seen
in the USA and has never been in any recorded crosses.
Rodionenko who named astrachanica but never provided a
proper description noted in some of his papers that it
was about 6 inches tall. Somehow this was never
considered an alarm signal when it was being
distributed because the seed that had been grown had
come from him. Where the mix up occurred no one knows.
But Kalmikji and all of its kin are something more
like an iris variegata hybrid and i suspect that is
exactly what they are. Future books will probably
refer the Iris astrachanica of horticulture to a MTB
hybrid.
