This was one single rhizome?  Not an extended rhizome,  which lengthened each 
year without the mother rhizome rotting away?  
 
The original beds were planted here in the fall of 2003.  Digging into  those 
plantings, I'm finding some that have clear indications of each of the  four 
years.  Like tree rings.
