HYB: potting medium for seedling pots

After trying several different home made mixes, I've settled on using straight Miracle Gro potting mix (not potting soil, & not the kind that holds extra moisture). It's pretty coarse, seems to work well.

When I move pots with ungerminated seeds outdoors, I add several inches of "mowed" leaves to help moderate temperatures and protect from pounding rain.

<I would like some advice on the best potting medium for seedling pots. I have found most of the commercial potting soils hold too much water and have too little pore space. Any suggestions? Mix with sand? Or vermiculite? And what about the soil for the top? The same, or something more course?

Any suggestions would be welcome.
