My younger granddaughters don't really understand why I don't want them walking on the freshly dug iris beds. Years ago, I learned to protect the soil for the earthworms and the iris roots. In loose soil, I've dug irises with roots that are over 2 foot long. That was several years ago. Not seen the soil in such good shape here. Maybe my additives will improve the texture. Many stalks on 'Star Gate.' The new planting of 'Over and Over' was watered all summer, but the one in the garden not so often. It's been extremely dry here. Anything I want to dig has to be watered first. Concrete. Where I grew irises in AR the water table was at 20 feet. No, I don't think the roots reached the water table, but the sand was so bad that they had to be planted about 2 inches below the surface to hold the plants up. Linda, if your water table is four feet down, isn't it possible the iris roots may get deep enough to tap into it? ;-) Betty Wilkerson . . . still moving irises --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
