I believe that it is I variegata that gives the characteristic of reduced
size in the leaves as fall approaches. To me it is an indication of
winter-hardiness. Lloyd Z. Durham NC Zone 8. (Where winter-hardiness is not
quite as important as it was when I was in  Ontario, Canada.
