"Linnaeus was born Carolus Linnaeus but wrote his name as above
after being knighted."
I think that you will find that he was born Karl von Linne but you see his
name written as Carolus Linnaeus because his books were written in Latin and
that is the Latin translation of his name. General adoption of his latinized
name resulted from the fact that, until about 1960, almost all trained
systematists in Europe attended schools and universities that demanded
fluency in reading and writing Latin.
