Let's not go overboard.  Sphagnum moss is not "toxic" and it is on the
market.  It's a great medium for starting seeds, for example, since it does
not support the damping-off fungus and encourages root growth.  It is true
that a few cases of a serious fungal disease have been traced to it.  Each
person needs to evaluate the risk for themselves.

Does anyone know if the bags of milled sphagnum you can buy to start seeds
is sterilized before being packaged?
