You are almost right. "Sports" (mutations in vegetatively propagated plants)
_do_ happen once in a while, but it is quite rare.
Your explanation is almost certainly correct.
Fighting ignorance, superstition, etc. is difficult (we have a lot of trouble
with the "face on Mars"). Good luck.
Check the archives for past discussions on the subject ("colour" might have been
spelled differently, though ;-)
